Geopark Bletterbach Gorge – the Grand Canyon of South Tyrol
The up to 400 meter deep canyon stretches about eight kilometers, and invites you to a journey through time in the millions of years of geological history. The Bletterbach removed over 10 million tons of rock and shipped them into the Adige Valley - in the intact rock layers can now be read like a book. The rock composition shows their origin, the climate and the environment about 250 million years ago.
Moreover, they found dinosaur tracks in the layers of the Gardena sandstone. Well-preserved impressions of parts of plants and numerous traces of food and grubbing are telling about the flora and soil life of that time. In addition, fossils of clams, snails and cephalopods were found, which can be seen in the Geopark in Aldino.
