Hot & Spiced: South Tyrolean Mulled Wine

Recipe Tip
As the days grow shorter and the winter air turns crisp, few things are cozier than a cup of South Tyrolean mulled wine. In South Tyrol, mulled wine is more than a drink – it’s an experience full of flavor and tradition.
Ingredients for 4 servings:
750 ml red wine (Merlot or Lagrein)
2 tbsp brown sugar
3 cloves and 1 star anise
1 piece of cinnamon peel (approx. 2 cm)
Peel of 1/2 orange
A splash of orange liqueur
1 orange slice per cup

Preparation:

Choosing the right wine is key to a perfect mulled wine. Best is Merlot or Lagrein.
Heat the red wine with sugar, orange peel, and spices in a pot to about 80 °C. Remove from heat and let it steep with the spices for at least half an hour to fully release the flavors.
Remove cinnamon, cloves, and star anise, then serve the mulled wine hot.
